DRIVER LICENSE POINT SYSTEM
Traffic violations are assigned a point value based on the severity of the violation. Every time a driver is
convicted of a traffic violation, the Department of Revenue (DOR) adds a certain number of points to their record.
Violation Point Value
| Speeding | 3 points |
| Careless & Imprudent Driving (Section 304.016 .4, RSMo) | 4 points |
| Knowingly Allowing an Unlicensed Driver to Operate a Vehicle | 4 points |
| A Felony Involving a Motor Vehicle | 12 points |
| Obtaining a Driver License by Misrepresentation | 12 points |
| Operating a Vehicle With a Suspended or Revoked Driver License | 12 points |
When You Accumulate Too Many Points
If you accumulate too many points in a given time period, the DOR will notify you. If you accumulate 4 points
in 12 months, they will send you an advisory letter, warning you of your unstable status. If you ignore the warning and
get 8 more points in 18 months, the DOR will suspend your drivers license.
Staying of Points
It is possible to have points removed from your Missouri driving record by
taking an approved driver improvement course. The judge in your case may order the course, or your attorney
may request it as part of a plea bargain. This is called staying of points.
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
Once you successfully complete the driver improvement course, Form 4444 will be generated and mailed
to you. It is your responsibility to take this form to the court, Drivers License Bureau, or your
attorney in order to have your points removed.
