school is Traffic101.com®. Thank you!"
Marion A Douglas - West Hills, CA
Traffic school. What two words could possibly be more dreadful? Sitting in a classroom for
hours at a time, with some dull instructor explaining the minute details of the "laws of the road." Well, you
can now change all that!
Welcome to Traffic101.com®, a simple easy way of avoiding the total loss of a great weekend. With Traffic101.com®
you can go through the traffic school course online at your own pace any day or time you want.
You can complete the entire course all at once or you may leave the course at any time and continue later from
where you left off.
Reasons for Attending Traffic School
Traffic school, defensive driving and driver improvement are all different names for the same
thing - a course designed to teach defensive driving skills to licensed drivers who have some
way violated their state’s traffic laws or have committed a moving violation such as a
speeding ticket or red light ticket.
The most common reason people go to traffic school is because they got a ticket
and the court has required or suggested they take it. But depending on your state, you may also take a
traffic school course or defensive driving course to remove points from your DMV
record or to get an auto insurance discount.
Why Take Traffic School Online?
If you are like most people, your time is so limited that you can’t imagine giving up an entire Saturday
for traffic school. But you also know that not completing your traffic school
requirement can really mess up your driving record and raise your car insurance rates. Not much of a choice is it?
But with Traffic101.com you don’t have to make that tough choice. You can take traffic school over the Internet
at your own pace and on your own time. Do it on your lunch hour, before dinner, after the kids have gone to bed,
whenever – it’s up to you. And since you can start and stop the course whenever you want, you are in total
control of your traffic school experience.
Not that familiar with computers? No problem. We promise our courses are easy to follow and user friendly.
Still not convinced? Try the course out before you even pay for it.
Am I Eligible for Traffic School?
Different states have different requirements for traffic school defensive driving.
Depending on both the state where you got a ticket and the state where you hold a driver’s license, your
traffic school eligibility will vary.
In order to be eligible for traffic school in California:
- You must have a valid California driver's license.
- You must have not attended traffic school for a citation issued within
the past 18 months of your present citation (violation date to violation date.)
- You have not failed to appear on the citation.
- The infraction is not more than 1 point.
- You were not cited for any charge involving alcohol or drug use or possession.
- You were not charged with exceeding a speed limit by more than 25 miles per hour.
- You do not hold a commercial driver's license of any class. Effective September 20, 2005,
the state prohibits holders of a commercial driver’s licenses from attending traffic school,
regardless of whether the violation was committed in a commercial or private vehicle.
Out-of-state convictions for California drivers: The California DMV will add points to your
driving record for traffic convictions you receive in other states, the District of Columbia, Puerto
Rico, and Canada.
Out-of-state drivers: The California court where you got your ticket will report the offense
to your home state. Depending on your home state, you may be eligible to take traffic school. Contact
the CA court that gave you the citation to see if they will allow you to complete traffic school in lieu
of reporting the citation to your home state.
You are eligible to take a defensive driving course once every 12 months. This will get your Texas ticket
dismissed and will relieve you from having to pay the fines and costs associated with the traffic ticket.
In order to dismiss a traffic citation by taking a driving safety course:
- Enter a plea of ‘guilty’ or ‘no contest’ to the charge, request to take the course, and pay the fees to the court;
- Present a valid Texas driver’s license or permit, you must NOT possess a Commercial Driver License (CDL);
- Have not completed a course within one year of the date of this ticket;
- Were not speeding 25 MPH or more over the posted speed limit;
- Present proof of liability insurance;
- Complete course within 90 days of court approval;
- Submit uniform certificate of completion (obtained upon completion of the course) and driving record (obtainable from DPS in Austin for $10), in accordance with Court instructions.
Out-of-state convictions for Texas drivers: Out-of-state violations are reported on your Texas driving
record and points are assessed according to Texas laws.
Out-of-state drivers: The Texas court where you got the ticket will report the offense to your
home state. Non-resident military members who receive a ticket in TX can have it dismissed by taking a
TEA-approved driving safety course. Other drivers should contact the court of jurisdiction to see if
taking a TEA-approved driving safety course will get the ticket dismissed.
You are eligible to attend a driver improvement course once in any 12-month period and no more than five
times in your lifetime. Holders of commercial driver's licenses (CDL) are not eligible to take this course.
The 4-Hour Basic Driver Improvement Course (BDI) is for traffic violators who have not taken a driver
improvement course in the last 12 months. There must not be a collision associated with the ticket in
order to be eligible for this course.
The Traffic Collision Avoidance Course (TCAC) is a 4-hour course for traffic violators who were
involved in a traffic accident involving death or bodily injury requiring transport to a medical facility.
The 8-Hour Intermediate Driver Improvement Course (IDI) may be required for traffic violators who
have already taken the 4-hour course in the last 12 months.
The court may also require it for traffic violators with a poor driving history or who are in danger of a
license suspension.
This course is different from the 8-hour Aggressive Driving Course and the 8-hour Driving While License
Suspended course. Your court order will identify which type of course you should take.
Out-of-state citations for Florida drivers: If you have received a ticket in another state,
that state will send Florida the ticket information and it will be added to your record. You will
receive points on your license if the ticket is a point-accessible violation according to Florida
statute. You cannot take a traffic school course for this ticket. Any unpaid ticket reported by
another state will result in the suspension of your Florida license.
Out-of-state drivers: The Florida court where you got your ticket will report the offense to
your home state. Depending on the state, you may be eligible to take traffic school.
You are eligible to take a Nevada traffic school course either to have a ticket dismissed or to have
points removed from your record, but not both. Which course you are eligible for depends on your situation.
Having your Nevada ticket dismissed means that you have agreed to take traffic school as part of a plea
agreement with the court. The court is giving you the opportunity to clear the ticket before the DMV is
ever notified. Once the court receives your certificate of completion, they will not report the ticket to the Nevada DMV.
If you don’t complete traffic school, the conviction will be reported to the DMV, and the appropriate points
will be added to your driving record. You may still take the Traffic101.com traffic school course to get a 3-point
reduction. To be eligible for the point reduction course, you must have at least 3 points on your Nevada DMV record
(but less than 11) and must not have taken traffic school for at least 12 months. Once you successfully complete the
traffic school course, your certificate of completion will be sent directly to the Nevada DMV, who will then deduct
3 points from your driving record.
Out-of-state convictions for Nevada drivers: You should first contact the court of jurisdiction for possible
plea bargain arrangements. Any conviction will become part of your Nevada driving record. Out-of-state convictions
do not generate demerit points.
Out-of-state drivers: You should first contact the court of jurisdiction for possible plea bargain arrangements.
Nevada courts may or may not accept out-of-state traffic schools. If you have already paid the citation or have been
convicted of an offense, you should contact your home state DMV for their policy on demerit points and traffic safety schools.
You are eligible to take a defensive driving course once every three years. Taking the course will get you a
3-point reduction on your driving record.
Out-of-State citations for Idaho drivers: Idaho Transportation Department may suspend or revoke your
driver’s license for a conviction or action in another state for an offense that, if committed in Idaho, would
be grounds for suspension.
Out-of-state drivers: The Idaho court where you got a ticket will report the offense to your home state.
Depending on the state, you may be eligible to take traffic school.
You are eligible to take a driver improvement course for the purpose of point reduction at the discretion of
the court that gave you the citation. While some courts allow traffic violators to take an Internet course
such as Traffic101.com, many still do not. If you would like to take the Traffic101.com course for a court
that does not specifically allow online traffic school, we suggest you make a special request from the judge
or court clerk.
Out-of-state convictions for Missouri drivers: Points are assessed to a Missouri driving record
according to Missouri laws if a person receives an out-of-state violation.
Out-of-state drivers: If an out-of-state driver receives a violation in the state of Missouri,
the ticket is reported to the driver’s home state. It is up to that state to take action against the driver.

What About My Car Insurance?
How getting a traffic citation and then taking traffic school affects your auto insurance is different depending on the state.
California Auto Insurance
Each time you get a ticket there is a potential for points to be added to your driving record. If you are
eligible for and take traffic school, the ticket does not appear on your public driving record, and your
insurance is not affected. If you are not eligible for traffic school, or choose not to take the course,
the conviction is reported to the DMV, and the appropriate points are added. This can severely affect your
insurance premiums.
Texas Auto Insurance
If you get a ticket, and take a defensive driving course to have that ticket dismissed, the ticket will not
appear on your driving record. Your insurance rates will not be affected. Your insurance provider may also
give you an additional discount for taking a defensive driving course. You should contact your agent for details.
Nevada Auto Insurance
If you get a ticket in Nevada and take traffic school to have that ticket dismissed, it will not be reported to
the Nevada DMV. Your car insurance should not be affected.
If you don’t have the ticket dismissed, the court will report the ticket to the DMV and points will be added to
your driving record. Taking traffic school at this point will get you a 3-point reduction. Your driving record
will show that you got a point reduction and your insurance company will see this. How this affects your rates
will depend on your insurance company.
Idaho Auto Insurance
Every traffic violation has a point value associated with it. More serious violations will get you more points.
The more points you have on your driving record, the more your insurance premiums will be raised.
If you take a defensive driving course you can get a 3-point point reduction on your driving record. Your auto
insurance provider will take this into account when accessing your rates.
Florida Auto Insurance
If you get a ticket in Florida, you can have it dismissed by taking the appropriate driver improvement course.
Your driving record will not show the ticket, and your insurance will not be affected.
